Who Am I Beneath All My Roles?

in midlife reflecting on their identity beyond the roles they have carried

Discovering Your Original Identity Beyond the Roles You Carry

Have you ever had a moment when you looked around at your life and thought: “I know who everyone else needs me to be. But who am I?” It’s a surprisingly common question, particularly when life enters a new season. For years, your identity may have been connected to what you did for other people and situations.

You’ve been a child, a spouse, a parent, a professional, caregiver, leader, the strong one, the dependable one. Those roles can be deeply meaningful. They can challenge, stretch, and grow you. However, they are not the whole of who you are.

Identity Beyond Your Roles

The danger comes when a role becomes an identity. Each role describes something you do. An identity describes how you understand who you are with or without the roles. That distinction becomes especially important when circumstances change.

You may be in a phase of life when the children grow up and move out, a career is coming to an end, some relationships are changing, and responsibilities shift. Suddenly, the roles that organized your life may no longer behave the same way. That’s when an important question surfaces: “Who am I now?”

Rather than seeing that question as a crisis, consider seeing it as an invitation. Maybe you’re being given an opportunity to discover parts of yourself that became quiet while you were busy fulfilling everyone else’s needs. Your authentic identity didn’t disappear. Instead, you may have spent years adapting to circumstances, learning how to be responsible, how to keep the peace, and how to accomplish what needed to be accomplished. All of those adaptations may have been necessary, but they don’t define your entire identity.

Discovering Your Original Design

There is a deeper part of you underneath the roles and expectations: your values, your desires, your gifts, your convictions, your wisdom, your spiritual life, your voice, and your capacity to create and contribute. That is the territory I call YOUR ORIGINAL DESIGN.

An Identity Exercise for Your Next Chapter

Take a sheet of paper and write down all your current roles. Then complete these sentences:

  • I am not only a ________.
  • I am someone who values ________.
  • I feel most alive when ________.
  • Something I’ve always wanted to express is ________.
  • Something I know about myself now that I didn’t know ten years ago is ________.

Don’t try to create the “right” answers. You’re not taking a personality test. You’re listening. Listening is often where identity begins to become clear.

You Don’t Have to Become Someone New

There is so much messaging around becoming a “new you.” But maybe your next chapter isn’t asking you to become someone new. Perhaps it’s asking you to become more fully yourself.

Bring your experience and your wisdom. Bring your scars, your lessons, and your love. Bring everything you’ve learned, and then decide what belongs in the next chapter. Although your roles are part of your story, they are not the entirety of your identity. There is much more for you to discover, and perhaps this season of your life is the perfect time to begin.
