Redeeming Factors in Tough Situations: How Your Struggles Set You Up for Purpose

redeeming factors in tough situations lead to growth and purpose

Why Struggle Is Often the Setup, Not the Failure

How Your Struggles Set You UP for Purpose

If you’ve ever felt like you’ve failed too many times or stayed stuck for too long, I’ve been there as well.

But what if I told you your struggle is actually a setup for your purpose?

Redeeming factors in tough situations often reveal themselves only after we stop seeing struggle as failure and start recognizing it as preparation.

Point 1: The Power of Growth Through Experience

There is profound power in growing through experience. I didn’t always have this level of insight or understanding about inner growth.

Some of my biggest lessons came after falling flat on my face. Like many of us, I graduated from the “school of hard knocks.”

But here’s the truth: getting knocked down isn’t failure. Rather, staying down is.

Each time you get up, you don’t start from scratch. Instead, you start from experience. That’s progress. That’s growth.

And yes, walking your own path can ruffle feathers. I was once told, “everyone in our group thinks you’re a failure. You keep trying things that don’t work. Why don’t you just do normal things like everyone else?”

Maybe you’ve heard something similar.

However, maybe you’re not made for what everyone else is doing. You could be here to forge a new path.

I did the corporate thing. I did the work, I even had fun. But deep down, I knew it didn’t fit. It wasn’t aligned with my purpose, even though I didn’t know what that was yet.

There were also circumstances beyond my control. My ex-husband actively sabotaged my business and relationship attempts, even with our children, making feasible threats.

Yet, even through that, I gained something more valuable than what I had lost: clarity, strength, and a deeper connection to my calling.

Now, I learn almost exclusively through a peaceful process rather than the chaos of hard experiences.

Point 2: Look for the Redeeming Factor

This life? It’s Earth School. You’re not just here to survive situations that drain your spirit. Rather, you’re here to develop your soul character and grow into your calling.

So what do you do when you’re stuck in a toxic job, a draining relationship, or a situation that weighs you down?

You look for the redeeming factor. That hidden lesson. The gold buried in the dirt. The thing that makes the pain purposeful.

Sometimes it’s what gives you strength to stay. And sometimes it empowers you to step out and leave.

When you begin looking for redeeming factors in tough situations, even painful experiences can begin shaping clarity, strength, and purpose.

What You Might Be Learning:

Maybe you’re:

    • Learning how to set boundaries
    • Realizing what doesn’t align with your soul
    • Being redirected toward something that supports your purpose

Try This:

Write down every detail of what drains you and what limiting beliefs come with it.

Then, flip the script. Write down what you do want in your life that takes you out of what has been your story.

Toss the negative list. Keep the life-giving one.

Speak forgiveness and grace over each situation, and over yourself often.

Because bitterness festers, but forgiveness frees you.

Point 3: What You Focus On Grows

One of the definite truths I’ve learned is that what you focus on grows.

My dad was a POW for three years during WWII. Starved, broken, forced to work in coal mines. Yet even in those dark moments, he found a redeeming factor.

A guard, nicknamed The Spider, treated him with dignity. He gave my dad toothbrushes, soap, and other small comforts.

Years later, my dad visited him in Japan where they became friends based on common respect and honor for each other.

Even the darkest places can hold a small light.

Philippians 4:8 reminds us: Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable ~ think about these things.

Because what you focus on increases.

It’s like when you’re thinking about buying a yellow car ~ suddenly, you see yellow cars everywhere. Nothing changed except your focus.

Shift your focus to what is excellent. Watch your life go from black and white to vivid, blooming color.

Try This:

Start a Redeeming Factors List.

Write down every good thing you see, hear, or feel. Do it for a week or longer.

You will see that most of those things are what you’ve been thinking about. Now, how do you want to shift your perspective and think of only what you’d like to have in your life?

Your Transformation Is a Redeeming Factor

Every redeeming factor you uncover becomes proof that your struggle was not wasted, it was shaping who you were becoming.

Thank you for showing up. Share this with someone who’s struggling or searching.

Come back and share in the comments how your perspective has shifted. I promise you, it will. And then count that transformation as one more redeeming factor.
