Healing Through Grace: The Turning Point When Pain Becomes the Path to Freedom
Have you ever done the right things… and everything still got worse?
I have. And it was that chaos that my journey of healing through grace quietly began.
They say grace is beautiful. But let me tell you something they don’t often say: Grace is gritty. Grace is war. Grace is what shows up when everything else has failed.
This isn’t a post about a quick fix or a fairy tale ending. This is about what happens when you’re left with nothing but God, Source of Love… and the stubborn decision to believe healing is still possible. My journey of healing through grace taught me that freedom grows slowly.
The Letter That Cracked Everything Open
Years ago, I sat in a counseling session, emotionally raw from the trauma of a stalking ex-husband, trying to piece together the wreckage of fear and grief that had landed on me and my children. The counselor suggested I write a letter to my dad, a man I deeply loved but who carried his own legacy of brokenness. The goal? To open a line of communication and finally face the pain between us so we could clean up the convoluted foundation.
I didn’t want to do it but I did, hoping for a good outcome. What followed wasn’t healing. There was backlash, misunderstandings, and accusations. My siblings thought I needed psychiatric help, so I went. In only a few weeks, the psychologist told me to “just let it go” since only one other family member visited to share their thoughts. I was left with no resolution… just a broken heart full of questions.
The Missing Ingredient: Grace
No one gave me tools to process what I was feeling. But one thing became painfully clear: there was a missing ingredient in all the advice, therapy, and efforts I had made. Grace. Not the soft kind that glosses over hurt, the kind that sits in the pain and says, “Even here, I choose to love.”
I began to realize that none of us are fully equipped to handle deep emotional wounds ~ especially the kind passed down through generations. What I had interpreted as rejection or judgment was often just people doing the best they could with what they knew.
When Grace Grows in the Dark
Several years passed; life didn’t get easier ~ it just kept going. But one day I realized something had shifted: The memories were still there, but they didn’t own me anymore. I felt a strange new sensation ~ freedom. That’s the freedom that comes from grace.
Grace became the healing balm I never knew I needed. It walked hand in hand with forgiveness and slowly reshaped how I saw the people who had hurt me and even more importantly, how I saw, accepted, and loved myself. They really only knew what they knew at the time and none of us were experts. It became clear that anyone can experience healing through grace, even in the darkest seasons.
The Body Breaks Before the Breakthrough
Around that time, my body had begun to break down under the weight of it all. Years of chronic fatigue, adrenal burnout, and raging cortisol stripped me of energy and clarity. Doctors couldn’t explain what was happening. I barely had strength to function. But deep in the exhaustion, God was still working.
Even when I had no words, grace whispered, “You don’t need to understand everything to move forward.”
Grace Is More Than a Feeling ~ It’s a Way of Being
Grace doesn’t mean ignoring your pain; it means honoring it ~ and choosing not to pass it on. It means treating yourself and others with dignity, even when they don’t “deserve” it. It’s choosing to see someone’s humanity before their mistakes.
Here’s the truth I hold to now:
“Grace is an undeserved favor ~ like forgiving someone who hasn’t asked, or showing kindness even when it’s not earned.”
It’s not about excusing behavior. It’s about breaking the chain; this is the kind of healing through grace that reshapes your whole view of love.
What Does Grace Look Like in Your Life?
Everyone you encounter is walking their own journey, only aware of what they know at the time… just like you. Sometimes the most radical thing you can do is close a door… but leave a window cracked open. Because grace gives people space to grow. You won’t always get the apology. You may never get the clarity, but you can still get free. And freedom? That’s what grace is for.
Reflection Prompt:
What relationship, memory, or pain in your life needs the gift of grace today? Not because they’ve earned it ~ but because you deserve peace.
