Live Excellently: When to Hold, Heal, and Let Go

live excellently through discernment and growth

What It Really Means to Live Excellently

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that although my business name has changed over the years, my motto has remained the same for more than two decades:

“Live Excellently. Give Generously. Love Lavishly.”

To live excellently isn’t just a motto for me. It’s been my guiding principle through personal growth, nervous system regulation, and emotional healing across more than two decades of life and work. Recently, I had to close a business I began on March 1, 2020. Never in my wildest imagination did I foresee months of shutdowns, uncertainty, fear, and unprecedented pressure across the small-business world. At some point, wisdom isn’t about pushing harder. Rather, it’s about listening deeper.

It reminded me of the old Kenny Rogers song The Gambler:

“You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em, know when to walk away and know when to run… Every gambler knows that the secret to survivin’ is knowin’ what to throw away and knowin’ what to keep.”

That lyric about gambling is really about discernment.

Life Is a Series of Embodied Bets

In many areas of life, we are taking chances on something meaningful working out: a new job, a relationship, a move, a dream, or a business. Even healing requires faith that something better is possible.

Entrepreneurship especially feels like spinning plates while walking forward. You plan, research, take action, adjust, subtract, expand, and then pause again to reassess. However, what most people don’t talk about is that discernment isn’t just mental, it’s nervous-system based. When your system is regulated, you can sense clarity. When it’s dysregulated, everything feels urgent, fearful, or forced.

Sometimes living excellently looks like going all in. Sometimes it looks like releasing what your body, mind, and spirit no longer have the capacity to carry. To live excellently includes knowing when effort becomes resistance instead of alignment.

Personal Responsibility Is Embodied

This is where personal responsibility becomes more than willpower, it becomes presence. To live excellently requires awareness, research, curiosity, emotional maturity, and nervous-system stability. It’s a heart-mind-body space where responsibility isn’t punishment, it’s empowerment.

Previous generations worked with what they knew. Their stress responses, beliefs, and behaviors passed down through cultural and survival patterns. From the moment we’re conceived, our nervous system begins learning how the world feels, safe, rushed, unpredictable, nurturing, or critical.

It used to be thought that by age seven we were “set.” However, neuroscience now shows us something hopeful: the brain is malleable, the nervous system is adaptable, and transformation is possible at any age. You are not locked into old reactions, you are not sentenced to mediocrity. You can rewire, restore, and realign your life over time. Personal responsibility becomes the bridge between who you were conditioned to be and who you’re called to become.

From Survival to Excellence

As adults, responsibility moves beyond logistics into embodiment. It’s no longer just what you do, it’s how you respond. Instead of blame, you bring curiosity. Collapse gives way to capacity, and reactivity gives way to regulation. Personal responsibility takes the bull by the horns, gently and wisely, not with force, but with presence.

Rather than feeling defeated, offended, or powerless, you begin asking what is mine to change, what is mine to release, and what is mine to embody next.

Living excellently is about leveling up from a strong internal foundation. It’s choosing respectful awe, grounded courage, and even childlike wonder as you grow. When your nervous system is regulated, your decisions become less fear-driven and more spirit-led. You don’t rush into or cling to what no longer fits, you discern.

Creating Ripples of Excellence

When each of us takes responsibility for our own inner life, something powerful happens outwardly. Your healing changes rooms, your regulation changes conversations, and your courage changes culture. Even when life brings disruption, you can learn to reverse inherited patterns that never belonged to you in the first place. Many of your limitations were someone else’s fear, agenda, or lack of understanding. Therefore, there’s no energy left for blame when you’re busy building daily victories.

Living excellently starts in your heart and nervous system before it ever shows up externally. As you regulate, release, and realign, you begin letting go of what you were never meant to carry and replacing it with possibility, clarity, and grace. Excellence isn’t perfection, it’s congruence between spirit, mind, and body.

Being Perfected in Your Uniqueness

You are the only being on earth with your precise combination of spirit, heart, mind, body, perception, personality, and expression. The expert of you lives within you. Uniquely and wonderfully made, you were never meant to be a copy of anyone else. To live excellently means allowing yourself to be gently perfected, not pressured, not compared, but aligned day by day, decision by decision, breath by breath. Only you can be you, and only you can offer your particular genius to the world.

Now imagine what happens if each person takes that responsibility seriously, living regulated, conscious, courageous, and loving. Ripples of goodness, waves of grace, a culture of excellence rooted in embodiment. That’s what it truly means to live excellently.
