A Story of Healing & Forgiveness: Breaking Generational Trauma Through Grace
A Story of Healing & Forgiveness | Necessary Grace from Be the Masterpiece
Today, I want to share something close to my heart. Something I believe could become a turning point for you the same way it was for me.
We’re diving into Chapter 1 of my book, Be the Masterpiece. We’re doing this a second time because it’s that important. Maybe this time, with different words, it will hit a little differently.
And this isn’t just about grace as a pleasant idea or a spiritual buzzword. Instead, I’m talking about real, tangible, life-altering grace. The kind that changes how you see yourself, others, and even God.
Let’s Begin with Inspiration
“To be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
— Ephesians 4:23–24 (ESV)
The Letter That Rocked Everything
Years ago, in a quiet counseling office, I was given an assignment I didn’t expect:
Write a letter to my father.
It was supposed to be healing. A way to confront the things said and done… and the pain left unsaid.
But silence had become a wall in our family. Thick with misunderstandings and old wounds passed down like heirlooms.
Shame and humiliation had been woven through generations. And that letter?
It was like lighting a match in a gas-filled room. It did not go well.
My siblings thought I needed therapy. So I went. However, the psychologist told me to just “let it go.”
But how do you move on when your soul is caught in a loop of confusion, grief, and unmet needs?
No one gave me tools that truly helped. Therefore, I turned to the only Source I knew would understand.
First, I prayed. Then, I listened. Finally, I sat in the ashes of what I thought would be healing and tried to learn from the wreckage.
The Missing Ingredient: Grace
Even after counseling, endless advice, and effort, I still felt stuck.
That’s when I realized: the missing piece was grace. Not just understanding grace intellectually but living from it. Breaking generational trauma through grace requires patience, honesty, and love.
Consequently, letting grace reshape the way I spoke. The way I forgave. Moreover, the way I responded… even when that grace wasn’t returned.
Grace isn’t always soft. Rather, it’s resilient. It’s strong.
Then, I started noticing something: We’re all walking around with invisible wounds. Old trauma. Unspoken fear. Generational pain. Additionally, most of us don’t know how to tend to them.
Therefore, we protect ourselves. We withdraw.
Specifically, back into the quiet shell I built as a child. There’s no rejection in choosing isolation… but no real connection, either.
Several Years Later… Something New
The memories stayed the same. The story didn’t change.
However, one day, something inside me had moved the needle. It felt like grace had slowly wrapped itself around those raw places. Like new skin forming over wounds I thought would never heal.
First, I stopped needing to understand everything. Next, I stopped trying to fix people who didn’t want healing. Furthermore, I stopped believing that pain had the final word.
It became clear to me that people who only survive still have wounds. Meanwhile, people who are healed and thrive wear scars.
Grace became a faithful companion, always walking alongside forgiveness. This is what breaking generational trauma through grace looked like in my life.
Through the Fire of Health & Hardship
Just as I began to live from grace… my body gave out.
Doctors couldn’t pinpoint the cause. Later, we learned I was battling severe adrenal burnout, chronic cortisol spikes, brain fog, and debilitating exhaustion.
Physically, I struggled to function. But spiritually? God was working on a deeper healing.
While the world spun in chaos, economic strain, broken systems, fractured families, I kept showing up anyway.
Quietly. Gently. With grace.
And eventually, I found myself coaching other women through the very healing I had once cried out for. Interestingly, the more I gave, the more I received.
What Grace Actually Is
Here’s a definition of grace I carry with me:
“Grace is treating oneself and others with respect, honor, and dignity. Specifically, not looking for weakness or exposing it unless someone’s safety is at risk. Furthermore, grace is unearned favor: forgiving those who haven’t asked, and showing kindness even when it hasn’t been earned.”
Grace doesn’t require you to ignore your pain. Instead, it invites you to honor it, without becoming it.
Grace says:
“I don’t agree with what you did but I still see your value. I’ll treat you accordingly, even if I have to love you from a distance.”
Your Invitation: Choose Grace Today
Therefore, here’s my invitation to you: What would it look like to choose grace today?
For yourself. For someone who hurt you. Or even for someone who doesn’t even know the damage they caused.
Grace isn’t weakness. Rather, it’s love, strengthened by truth.
